Ten years ago the area behind your steering wheel held two analogue dials under a plastic lens. Today it is a full TFT or LCD panel showing speed, navigation, tyre pressure, drive modes and ADAS warnings. On a car it is called the instrument cluster or MID. How to fit an instrument cluster screen guard

A cluster is usually easier to do than an infotainment screen because it is smaller and sits at a friendlier angle. The one thing that differs from a phone screen protector is access — on a car you are reaching past the steering wheel, so give yourself room before you peel anything.

• Work in shade, engine offAvoid direct sun. A hot display makes the adhesive grab before you have aligned it, and on a bike a sun-warmed console is almost impossible to fit cleanly.
• Drop the steering wheel fully (cars)Release the tilt lever and lower the wheel to its bottom position. This gives you a clear straight-on approach to the cluster instead of an awkward reach over the rim.
• Clean with the wet wipe, then the dry clothLift oils first, then buff dry. Check the corners — cluster bezels collect dust in the recess where the display meets the surround.
• Use the dust sticker lastDab the dust-removal sticker across the whole display and inspect with a torch at a low angle. Any speck left here becomes a permanent bubble.
• Dry-fit and mark your alignmentHold the guard in place with the backing still on. Note how it sits relative to the bezel edges so you can repeat that position blind.
