What a steering knob actually does
Without a knob, turning the wheel from lock to lock means the hand-over-hand shuffle β grab, pull, release, re-grab. Three or four times per full turn. With a knob, you plant one hand on the spinner and rotate. The knob turns freely on its mount, so your wrist stays neutral while the wheel goes all the way round.
Where this pays off in India specifically: reverse parallel parking into a gap barely longer than your car, three-point turns on a residential lane where a rickshaw is already waiting behind you, and multi-storey basement ramps that need near-full lock at walking pace. In all three you also want your other hand free β on the gear lever, on the handbrake, or draped over the passenger seat while you look back.
It is also the standard accessibility solution for drivers with limited use of one arm or hand. That is the original reason spinner knobs exist, and it remains the strongest case for one.

Black finish, free-spinning head, clamps to the wheel rim. Works on hatchbacks, sedans and SUVs β no model-specific version needed.
Rs 499Buy NowThe honest case against β read this before you buy
A spinner knob is a low-speed tool. On the highway it stops being an advantage and starts being a liability, for two reasons.
First, one hand on a knob is a worse grip than two hands on the rim if you hit a pothole at speed or a tyre lets go. Second, if an airbag deploys, the wheel is driven towards you at speed β a knob and the hand on it are in that path.
The sane way to use one: fit it, use it for parking, reversing, U-turns and slow city driving, and drive with both hands on the rim once you are up to speed. Many owners fit a knob that can be removed quickly and take it off before long highway runs. Also worth checking β rules on steering modifications vary, so confirm your local RTO's position and check that your insurer has no objection to fitted accessories.
How to fit a steering knob correctly
- Pick the mounting positionStandard placement is the 10 o'clock position for a right-hand-drive car, so your left hand rests naturally on it while your right stays free. Sit in your normal driving position and check the knob does not foul the indicator or wiper stalk at any wheel angle.
- Clean the rim where the clamp sitsWipe the section of the wheel with a damp cloth and let it dry. Dust and hand oil under a clamp is what causes slipping later.
- Open the clamp and seat it on the rimThe clamp should sit flat and flush against the wheel, not at an angle. If your wheel is a thick leather-wrapped SUV rim, seat it carefully so the padding is not pinched.
- Tighten firmly, then test by handGrip the knob and try to slide it along the rim. It must not move at all. Any play now becomes a loose knob in six months.
- Do a full-lock test in a parking spaceBefore your first real drive, turn lock-to-lock both ways while stationary. Check the knob clears your knees, the stalks and the dashboard through the whole range.
- Re-check the tightness after a weekClamps settle. One 30-second check after the first week of use, then every couple of months, is all it needs.
