What the new Duster gives you, and where it needs help

Renault brought the Duster nameplate back to India after it went off sale in 2022, and the third-generation car is a completely different machine. It rides on a new platform, comes with turbo-petrol engines with a strong hybrid joining later, and is packed with kit that the old Duster never had: a panoramic sunroof, six-way powered and ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS.

All of that is good news. The part nobody mentions at delivery is that a feature-loaded cabin also means more surfaces that scratch, smudge and scuff. Three spots take the most abuse in an Indian Duster:

The dual screens. The 10.1-inch infotainment display stands free on the dashboard and is angled towards you, which means your fingers reach it constantly. The 10.25-inch driver display sits right behind the steering wheel where dust settles. Both are glossy, so every fingerprint shows, and a single grain of grit under your thumb leaves a permanent mark on the coating.

The door sills. With 212 mm of ground clearance, everyone steps up and in. Shoes scrape the sill every single time. Within a few months the paint on that edge looks tired, and it is the first thing a resale buyer notices.

The tyres and wheels. A Duster looks its best with dark, clean rubber. Indian road dust and brake dust turn tyres grey within a week of a wash.

How to fit the Duster screen guard properly

Ten minutes, no tools, and the only thing that ruins it is dust. Park in shade or a closed garage, not in open wind.

1. Turn the car off and let the screens coolA warm screen holds static and attracts dust while you work. If the car has been in the sun, wait fifteen minutes.
2. Clean the infotainment screen and the MIDUse the dry microfiber cloth first for dust, then the wet wipe from the pack, then dry again. Any smudge left behind becomes a permanent bubble.
3. Lift the dust with the sticker stripDab the whole screen with the dust-removal sticker. Hold it up to the light at an angle and check again. This step is the difference between a clean fit and a ruined one.
4. Line up the cut-outs before peelingHold the guard over the screen dry and check the corners and any sensor cut-outs match. Only peel the backing once you are sure of the position.
5. Set one edge down, then let it fallPlace the top edge first, then slowly lower the rest. Do not press the middle down first, that traps air across the whole panel.
6. Push bubbles out to the nearest edgeUse the card or a soft cloth and work from the centre outwards. Small bubbles at the edge usually settle on their own within a day.
7. Repeat for the driver displayThe 10.25-inch cluster sits deeper behind the wheel, so drop the steering column to its lowest position first to give yourself room.
